Island of Ero

This morning we got up early and left Odense behind - yea - and headed south to Svendborg where we caught a ferry to the island of Ero. This small island is on the south edge of Denmark - only 9 miles across the water to Germany. The guidebooks say that this is the island to dream about with its thatched houses, rolling country roads, old windmills, and ancient graves.

The main town is Eroskobing, a 13th century market town, which is where we are staying. Frommer's guidebook for Denmark says, "If this small Danish island didn't exist, Hans Christian Anderson would have invented it. It's that special. Its capital of Eroskobing is a Lilliputian souvenir of the past. Walt Disney must have gone through this town with a paintbrush and a bucket of rainbow colors." The whole town is protected, no modern building can be in the center. The houses and cobblestone streets are like you are part of a movie set.

I was amazed that we had email access in our hotel room! We headed out to explore some more and take pictures. The afternoon lighting was much better on the houses. It really is a cute town. We will post pictures, but it will be hard to portray the quaintness of this place.

We are eating dinner at the hotel - the chef was telling us what it is going to be/or rather he tried to - I imagine that Charlie is going to get a lot of my meal. I will let you know tomorrow!

We are just back from dinner and it was excellent! But.....the amazing thing is that the people next to us were a mother (from Mason City, Iowa) and the son was from Seattle. It really is a very small world!
