Our flight to Chicago was smooth and then we had a 6 hour layover. We had plenty of time to study our maps looking at possible routes from Munich to Pilsen, Czech Republic - our planned first stop. The flight to Munich was packed - it actually was probably the smoothest flight we have ever had (other than being LONG!) We both got a little sleep.
We arrived in Munich around 10:00am. By the time we got our luggage, went through passport control, and got the car it was around noon when we left the airport. Our car is a Kia Sportage and Charlie says that it drives quite nicely.
The first hour or so of driving on the Autobahn in Germany is something else. The cars pass you like your are crawling so you are scared "spitless" and, at the same time, you are fighting jet lag. But....Charlie did quite well! Soon we did get on the 2 lane roads which are much more fun and more scenic. The countryside right now is quite beautiful with harvesting going on. We breezed through the old border crossing.
We got to Pilsen and the city center and drove around and around trying to find our hotel. Finally, we stopped and called the place and we had driven right by it earlier. We only went around the town square about 4 times trying to locate it.
It was quite nice to get showered and some clean clothes on. We ate dinner at the Pilsener Urquell Brewery Restaurant and I had my favorite Goulash soup. It is such a small world - at the table next to us were some kids on Facebook and the music was "Stand By Your
Man" followed by "Don't cry for me Argentina." You could be anyplace in the world!
We did make ourselves walk around the town square to see the old neat buildings, but we
both started fading fast. So hopefully, we will both get a good night's sleep. We need to get rested - we are heading to Boleslawiec, Poland - the home of the Polish Pottery! Of course, Charlie would rather that I would be half asleep there. We are spending two nights there - yea!
Glad to hear you guys made it okay and are enjoying the beer/goulash. All is well here. Sam informed us that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 and died in 1791 (which according to my research on Wikipedia is correct) and he was born in country that is "now known as Austria". I don't think you guys are heading that way but if you are, perhaps a souvenir would be fun for him.
