White Clifts of ?

Well we started off today and Mary said we were going to see the White Cliffs. I wondered how we were getting to Dover England and back in just one day and by car at that. It turns out I was confused (how normal) they were the White Cliffs of the Island of Mon. Yes, limestone and sand and rocks just pushed up in a big pile just 50 million years or so ago. The rocks and sandstone eroded away and presto "chango" you have white cliffs. They have an exploratory museum there that has great displays and a great National Geographic 3D video on the prehistoric sea creatures that lived here. Sam would have love the Mosasaurs and other swimming creatures from the Cretaceous Period. It was all very cool. We then took a hike up, up, and up to a lookout to see the cliffs.

The island of Mom has several churches that have beautiful 14th and 15th century frescoes. These frescoes were a means of describing the Bible to illiterate peasants. We stopped to look at
the Elmelunde Church Frescoes. These are really well done and exceptionally well maintained. The ceilings of the churches have the whole biblical story in very clear almost cartoon like pictures.

We returned to Copenhagen and rode the metro downtown for a last look and a chance to spend $50 on a medium pizza, two small beers, a coke and bottle of water. Of course, we engaged in a lot of serious people watching.

Tomorrow we are off to Odense on the middle island of Funen.
