Ok, I did have to make one last trip to a pottery place - there were a couple of items that I thought that I had to have. So after that, we were off to Poznan. We took the back roads on the way. The countryside is pretty - nothing spectacular, but we love it. Again, as I said yesterday, it is flat! Poor Poland has been sliced, diced, and portioned out for hundreds of years. There is something that is so resilent about the Polish People. This country just fascinates us and we are so in awe of the people. How, after all that has happened to them, do they keep picking themselves up??
We found our hotel just by luck - we thought that we had gone way past it and Charlie happened to take a hard left look and said, "There it is!" After getting settled in, we took the tram outside the hotel down to the town square which is just beautiful! It is very much like Wroclaw, Krakow, and Warsaw with beautiful buildings around a huge square with the town hall in the center. We had a snack there and just took the whole scene in - there was a wedding party just strolling around the square.
In the town square there is a exhibit with pictures taken at the end of WWI. Every place you go here you just wonder how much was bombed out and you also think of all of the battles that have been fought where you are driving.
The travel brochure that the hotel hands out has in its introduction the following paragraph which we want to pass on: "Poland has moved quicker than a greased goose to embrace capitalism, and few cities have done more than Poznan to ditch those clunky shackles of socialism. The collapse of communism brought with it a vengeful iconoclasm, with stars and sickles stripped from the buildings and statues they formerly adorned."
As you can tell, Poland just touches out hearts and we are already thinking of our next trip back to Poland.
We have pictures, but they will be in tomorrow's blog!
