Traveling and Brugge, Belgium

We have not fallen off the face of the earth, we are just computer challenged right now. We can not get ours to log in and the one here that I am using is a Flemish keyboard. So try this out for your understanding - "Brugge is qn q,qwing city qnd auite bequtiful" OK that is using our finger placement on their keyboard. We will try later. Off to explore.

4 October - Sunday

We finally got logged on to our computer! So a quick catch up - we left Denmark last Thursday, the 1st of October and had a LONG driving day with LOTS of highway construction through the northwest corner of Germany into the Netherlands. We spent the night at Groningen. We did not want to pay the costly hook-up charge for computers - especially since nothing exciting had happened that day!

Friday we drove to Bruges, Belgium and spent 2 nights there. It is truly one of our favorite cities - extremely "touristy," but totally delightful. To paraphrase, Rick Steves describes it well, "Renoir canals, pointy, gilded buildings, sidewalk cafes, fantastic beer, heavenly chocolate and a Michelangelo." It was a very wealthy city in the Middle Ages. It is just a very well-preserved city.

The Michelangelo is a Madonna and Child sculpture and is absolutely beautiful. It is in the Church of Our Lady. It is said to be the only Michelangelo statue to leave Italy in his lifetime.

This morning we left Bruges and headed southeast along the English Channel to Honfleur, France. We have never been here before and it is a beautiful, old, preserved town. We were commenting at dinner that we have never seen so many old beautiful towns!! This town is filled with tall very narrow buildings, because they were taxed on the width not the height. So... the buildings are very tall and skinny.

Tomorrow, we start our "Normandy Invasion." We will be staying at Arromanches for 3 nights. It is between Utah and Gold Beaches. Charlie was here 4 years ago with Doug, but I haven't been here for 25 years.
