Roaming day to Romo

We had a leisurely breakfast and started out to head north to the island of Fano and then changed directions and headed south. We decided why should we spend about a $100 to ride the ferry to that island when we could go south to the island of Romo for nothing. There is a 10km causeway to that island.

The guidebooks say that in the summer it's wild with "wall to wall" German vacationers. At this time of the year, we almost had the island to ourselves. We have never seen such a wide beach and at places it is around a 1/2 mile wide. You can drive on the beach and we did trying to avoid the sheep that were "sunbathing." I got some shells there.

There northern end of the island is a military firing range for airplanes. There is an observation platform for people to watch the planes. Charlie had a lot of fun doing that.

After leaving the island and heading south some more we saw some huge wind farms. One place had at least 32 wind turbines! It was located next to a raptor preserve - their birds have to be smarter because they can avoid the turbines. We can't figure out what is the problem back home with our turbines and the birds.

We visited another really cute town - Mogeltonder - I guess that filmmakers have called it "a fairy-tale setting." Its long street is line with gabled houses, many with thatched roofs, and most dating from the 1700's. At the end of the street is a small castle where the Queen's younger son lives. There is also a 12th century church which is beautiful. We did watch some guys thatching a roof again - it is just amazing to watch them work.

It was time to head north to Ribe. We got the car washed which turned out to be almost as funny as our clothes washing experience. We got it done though!

Tomorrow we leave Denmark and are off to the Netherlands.
