On to Ribe

We left Ero today. We were early for the ferry so we took a little side road where we saw a nice golf course that uses an old lighthouse as its clubhouse. On the way back to town we saw a little stand with gourds, pumpkins and squash on display - prices were posted and a cup for you to put your money in. There are "stands" like this all over the island selling produce, crafts, etc. and it is all on the honor system. (There is a picture of the stand in the slide show.)

As we were waiting for the ferry two large semi trucks arrived complete with shouts from the trailers about not wanting an ocean trip or at least that is what we thought the pigs were saying. When leaving the ferry the human passengers trouped down stairs and though there were many languages being spoken, the holding of noses was all one language. The whole boat ended up smelling - there is nothing like the smell of pigs! We rode with the windows down for quite a while!

As we were driving toward Ribe we happened to spot a man thatching a roof. We had not seen that since we left England twenty five years ago. We stopped and watched for a while. It is fascinating to watch.

We are now in the town of Ribe which is in Jutland, Denmark. This is the part of Denmark attached to Germany and the rest of Europe. Ribe is the best-preserved medieval town in Denmark. It has many fabulous buildings. Our hotel here was built in the 1500's and has been renovated more that once - but still no elevator! It is on the town square and across from the cathedral. Every year storks fly here to build their huge nests on top of these half-timbered houses. Unfortunately, they leave by September so we didn't get to see them. (Actually, we checked with local people here and they said that the storks did not come this year. They were quite sad about it.)

We are staying here two nights and then we will say farewell to Denmark.
